First exploratory field visit of the CASTOR project in the Evrotas River Basin

Between 19–23 November 2025, the scientific team of HCMR, in collaboration with staff from OikoM, carried out the first field visit to the study area of the CASTOR project.

During the visit, potential sites were identified in the Magoulitsas and Kastoras streams for the construction of Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) – small, nature-based structures that mimic natural beaver dams. BDAs can improve the hydrology and geomorphology of the streams under investigation, with the aim of increasing the availability of microhabitats that can serve as refuges for the species Pelasgus laconicus and Squalius keadicus during the summer dry period.

At the same time, barriers impeding fish movement were mapped in the streams. At selected points, targeted interventions will be designed to improve the ecological connectivity of the river systems and ensure free movement of fish.

In addition, potential sites were identified for the reintroductions of the target species in the streams, as well as in the wider basin. Sections of the Evrotas catchment were also identified where reduction or eradication of the alien species Oncorhynchus mykiss will take place.
