CASTOR Project
Conservation Actions for Supporting the Threatened freshwater fish of EvrOtas River
Project Title: Conservation Actions for Supporting the Threatened freshwater fish of EvrOtas River (CASTOR)
CASTOR Project aims to enhance the conservation status of P. laconicus & S. keadicus in the Evrotas River by implementing species translocations, habitat restoration, and community engagement to restore ecological integrity and promote sustainable water management.
About the Project
Overview: The primary objective of CASTOR is to enhance the conservation status and ensure the long-term survival of two highly threatened endemic freshwater fish species, Pelasgus laconicus and Squalius keadicus, within the Evrotas River Basin. By implementing targeted habitat restoration, target species in situ translocation and ex situ breeding, alien species control as well as public awareness actions, the Project aims to restore ecological integrity and promote sustainable water management practices in the river basin, contributing to the overall preservation of Mediterranean freshwater ecosystems.
Dates / Project duration: September 2025 – August 2028 / 3 years
Location: Evrotas River, Greece
Anticipated Results
R1
Increased area of occupancy and population size of P. laconicus and S. keadicus in three tributaries through in situ conservation translocations and ex situ breeding and restocking.
R2
Successful establishment of self-sustaining populations in newly restored habitats.
R3
Reduction of population fragmentation and increased genetic diversity.
R4
Restored riverine habitats with improved hydrological conditions to support summer refugia.
R5
Improved longitudinal connectivity in at least two tributaries, allowing species to bypass barriers and access key habitats.
R6
Assess and control Oncorhynchus mykiss population densities in targeted areas.
R7
Enhanced local community participation and support for conservation actions.
R8
Increased public awareness and understanding of freshwater conservation.
R9
Wider dissemination of project results and conservation knowledge.
