Fieldwork – March 2026

In March 2026, extensive fieldwork was carried out within the framework of the CASTOR project, by the scientific team of HCMR, aiming to support conservation actions for the threatened endemic fish of the Evrotas River: Pelasgus laconicus and Squalius keadicus.

During the field campaign, sampling activities, field inspections, and technical assessments of intervention and monitoring sites were conducted in the Ag. Mamas, Kardaris, Kastoras, Kelefina, and Magoulitsa streams, as well as along the main course of the Evrotas River.

Within the framework of the monitoring programme, the following activities were also implemented:

  • fish fauna sampling,
  • collection of samples for eDNA analysis,
  • collection of hydrological data,
  • recording of benthic macroinvertebrates and diatoms at selected sites.

Fish sampling under low-flow conditions is scheduled for June 2026, in order to complete the seasonal documentation.

Throughout the fieldwork, Brian Zimmerman, freshwater fish specialist, also participated, actively contributing to the scientific assessment of the sites and the planning of the next project actions.

We continue working towards the protection of the unique fish fauna of the Evrotas River and the restoration of its riverine ecosystems.
