Fieldwork – July 2026
In early July, the scientific team of HCMR was in the field aiming to support and conserve the threatened endemic fish of the Evrotas River, the Evrotas Minnow (Pelasgus laconicus) and the Evrotas Chub (Squalius keadicus).
Field inspections and technical evaluations of intervention sites were carried out along the main stream of the Evrotas, as well as in the streams of Agios Mamas, Kardaris, Kastoras, Kelefina and Magoulitsa.
Specifically, the actions included:
- Extensive ichthyofauna sampling
- Digital mapping of the intervention areas
- Collection of critical hydrological data
- Technical evaluation of selected sites for future conservation actions
The first translocations of threatened species are planned for the coming autumn. The goal is to establish new populations of the Evrotas Chub and reinforce the populations of the Evrotas Minnow at selected sites within the monitored streams.
The dedicated effort to protect the unique ichthyofauna of the Evrotas River and substantially restore its riverine ecosystems continues!
